Winter Fog

Winter is usually cold and dry for us yet the other day there was fog with a temperature of -15. This presented an unusual atmosphere to take advantage of.

Winter Loneliness

this old house sits in the middle a field in the midst of winter. aAhole in the roof is likely where the stovepipe came out. A snowmobile track crosses the scene bypassing the old building.

Winter Road

In the winter months depending on how much snow falls, the RM's (rural municipalities) only keep the main grids open. The remaining roads get snow accumulations which prevent travel and we wait till spring to again gain access for or photographic jaunts.

Its too cold to go out with camera gear so its inside photos for a while. This is our Mexican people (bought in Puerto Vallarta many years ago). I am playing around with frames, shadows and presentations as well....

Winter in Saskatchewan

Triptych Moose

I've posted two of these pictures but thought that putting them together would give a sense of movement. the cow looks like she was walking when in fact she was on the run.

Bison Bull

A closeup shot of his eye and nose. Several comments about being a safe distance when photographing…Yes I was in my truck on the road with a telephoto and a fence between us….

I mean Business

This bison bull moves towards me with a look of determination and purpose. It was feeding on the prairie grasses through a fresh blanket of snow.

Alces alces

Moose are a very large animal weighing in up to 1200 lbs. Despiture their size they are extremely agile. They even can look dainty as seen in this shot....they can also jump over a 6foot fence and run through the thickest bush with ease. The moose is not running but in a fast trot in the photo...by pointing their hoofs they can navigate fallen trees etc when in the bush... They are not very concerned or wary when crossing roads an highways and many are killed every year.

Moose Cow

A pair of cows crossed the road the other morning as they moved to another bush to feed. She notices me taking her picture.

Sunrise

On my way out the other day to do some shooting I had to stop and get a image....what is it about sunrise/sunsets other than they can be mesmerizing.

Weasel

Weasels in Saskatchewan turn colour in winter to a brilliant white with a patch black on their tail. They are incredible hunters of small prey such as mice and volls. This guy was chasing a mouse under the snow for a half hour, popping up every so often.....the mouse, I saw, made his escape but the weasel did not give up....I moved on to other pictures but I am left to wonder how this encounter ended......

Snowy

The Snowy Owls have been back for a couple of weeks. I went out yesterday to see if I cold find one to photograph. This female was the only one I was able to see.

Winter feed

Cows feeding in a field which was swathed and left for them.

On the Move

A mule deer buck and two does decide that I am a threat and make a beeline for higher ground. the rut is over but it is hunting season now so they are extremely wary of any movements.

Fire

Street scene the other day. Fortunately no one was hurt but the house was a total loss. Bittersweet for me as I spent 32 years in the fire service the last ten as a Captain and then Battalion Chief....the sounds , smells and foreground operations brought back a flood of memories.

Moose

Calf moose is getting ready for the long winter ahead.
